It’s your hard-earned money

You shouldn't pay for feeling confused about it. That's why I, a UX designer, co-founded Selma.

Why do you need a designer in FinTech?

I'm Valeria, the UX and visual lead at Selma. 👋

I co-founded Selma because of my mixed feelings with investing.

For me, a financial newbie, the idea of investing sounds like expensive gibberish. Search for "investing" and you're guaranteed to get progressively confused.

It's not about making things pretty.
According to Google image search, investing has a lot to do with guys in suits pointing at charts, and attempts to grow plants out of coins. It's futile, I've tried. 🌱 👎

Despite these associations, I know investing is important for anyone who can put savings aside. Taking care of your hard-earned money would be an adult thing to do.

Don't feel confident or excited about investing?
It’s not your fault.

I can easily relate to people who struggle to even get started.

The complexity and gibberish are rooted in finance.

  1. Intimidating interviews about your money
  2. Lingo and hidden information
  3. Weird prices
  4. Weird services
  5. Products named by falling asleep on a keyboard
  6. Bitcoins?
  7. Vibe

...to name a few.

The complexity and gibberish is rooted in finance.

What can design do?

Sadly, there's no "design wonder-slap-on" that could make things perfect in an instant. 🦄

Design is about understanding what's wrong with the big picture.

We've established that coins make bad soil for plants. 🌱

That's a start.

To make investing really click we need to do more: to look at the individual pieces such as language, price, transparency, and support.

There are many practical ideas that can make investing better. The best ones usually come from the people who would like to try, learn and enjoy investing.

I wished for a design wonder-slap-on, but got a unicorn instead. Close enough! 👍

Here's what our Selma crew have done so far.

How do you feel about talking to your private banker?

For me, it sounds intimidating.

It's a bit awkward to expose your financial life to a person across the desk.

To be honest, I'm even more annoyed about the part that follows. I feel like an imposter trying to wrap my head around prices, volatility, strategies, and performance. 👀

Set up things with friendly Selma bot whenever you like.
